Design Capitalizing on Warehouse Architecture:
Flexible Lighting and Circadian Rhythms for Diverse Applications
The NOT A HOTEL OFFICE was opened by architecture venture NOT A HOTEL in Harumi, Tokyo. The office is more than a mere workspace: it also serves as an embodiment of the company's philosophy towards the use of space. The office maximizes the potential of raw warehouse architecture, while seamlessly incorporating elements of surprise throughout.
A key feature of this facility is its versatility. The office can host art exhibitions, presentations, dinners and parties, as well as employees’ daily work. To accommodate these complex requirements, the lighting design features a wireless control system with color tuning and dimming capabilities, allowing for flexible transitions between scenes. Consequently, areas like the lounge or workspace can instantly switch to the optimal brightness and color temperature as needed, providing the ideal lighting environment for any given activity.
To balance user comfort and focus even in areas with limited natural light, NOT A HOTEL implemented an advanced lighting control system. By meticulously adjusting the color temperature and illuminance according to the time of day, the system artificially simulates the circadian rhythm indoors. This creates an environment that can naturally transition from energetic daytime hours to a relaxing evening atmosphere.
While integrating these lighting controls, the space pursues the optimal balance of function and aesthetics, preserving the warehouse's original ceiling height of approximately seven meters. By intentionally limiting the height of the partitions that divide functional areas to three meters, the expansive volume of the space remains visually unified. Furthermore, to counter the rugged industrial feel of the warehouse, a massive curtain—five meters high and 32 meters long—has been installed. This introduces a soft texture and an extraordinary sense of scale, generating a rich visual contrast within the space.
